music: "Carrion" by Fiona Apple "won't do no good to hold no seance ... "

This is not to the straights like my momma, friends or my blog boys/girls … this is for the vapid, foolish and willfully ignorant people that justify their hatred in the name of God and hetero privilege.

I recently did an article for Blackplanet.com titled Gay vs. Straight: A Common Ground, which is about the relationship between gay men and straight women. On Blackplanet.com they have a so-called forum and I was mortified at some of the responses to the article! I should never be shocked at ignorance, but these posts were the absolute lowest common denominator of utter foolishness and contagious absurdity. While this does not reflect the black community as a whole … it is a strong, poisonous taste. Here are a few of the responses ... I did not correct the grammar:

    Wow By:
Illini_E Look, if you are gay, why would you want to hang around straight folks anyway, and if your straight, and like to hang with gays, then maybe you better take a deeper look in the mirror.Bottom line.....if you are Gay, we are not hanging....i care less if we were previously friends for 50 years, you pull a rufus and chuck on me....we ain't boys no more. Matter of fact, i may have to beat you down, cause now everyone might think i'm gay.
    ********

By: DazeyJ Who wants to be around that perversion?I don't gay bash and I'll be cordial but hanging out on a regular basis? I'll pass! I don't want those spirits to become too familiar! Also, as a mother, I have to be very careful of what I open myself up to.

(AS A MOTHER WE ALREADY SEE WHAT SHE'S TEACHING HER CHILDREN! ---- HER PROFILE PROUDLY STATES “I am pro-life and don`t believe in gay rights.”)
    *********

Knowledge is infinite!!! By: tranesha I will admit that i am Christian and believe that being gay is wrong. On the other hand, i'm not gonna completely dismiss the article because of that belief. Because if you are a truly learned Christian you know that everyone isn't meant to go to heaven. Duh! Praise God!!

(YOU KNOW WHEN SOMEONE STARTS A COMMENT WITH "I'M A CHRISTIAN" -- IT'S GOING TO GET REAL JIM CROW-ISH. THIS WOMAN IS A HARDCORE CHRISTIAN; HOWEVER, ACCORDING TO HER PROFILE SHE IS “INVOLVED,” BUT NOT MARRIED! ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE ANY WOMEN WHO ARE NOT A VIRGIN WHEN THEY ARE MARRIED ARE AN ABOMINATION AND SO WILL ALL THEIR DESCENDANTS …. ACTUALLY THAT IS REPEATED MORE THAN HOMOSEXUALITY IS EVER STATED … I GUESS SHE MISSED THAT!)

    ***********

What??????? By: BlackBraniac This article is straight trash. Gay is wrong so don't try to make anything good come from it. IT IS A SIN! STOP TRYING TO JUSTIFY IT! GOD'S WRATH IS SOON TO COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(THIS IS FROM SOMEONE WHOSE SEXUALITY ISN’T LABELED ON HIS PROFILE AND ONE OF HIS INTERESTS IS AN “ACTIVIST”)
    *************
Silly People! By: 11Kap BLACK Men should not have to sacrifice their masculinity to get along with BLACK women. This is pure nonsense! Who needs a black woman like that? Men have to be platonic with some women, but that doesn't mean that gay men are better at it. I guess the world will not feel safe until every BLACK MAN in the world is a fag, so NO MORE BLACK CHILDREN WILL BE BORN....that's what this article is too timid to address.....azzholes! I know there will be gay people in the world, but do they have to be up on a pedestal? Please! Gimme a friggin' break already? at face value wrong

By: queenragga i have to admit.. most the gay males i encounter are very funny and entertianing..friendship is easily started, however when they want to tell all it gets very gross lol..they are better company at shopping! Beside in reality it just a modern day sodom and gomorrah. God help us all!
    *************

GOD bless us all By: christoferpea It's kinda disturbing how "MAINSTREAM' homosexuality is becoming. I'm not judging because to GOD sin is sin.. But 10 years ago, the policy was "don't ask, don't tell." Now.. people tell if when U don't care to know. I won't go all biblical.. but the the law IS placed in our hearts.. & we are some CONFUSED people. If this is the current standard of living.. We need to either be BEGGING for GOD's mercy.. or praying for forgiveness for Sodom & Gomorrah.

(THIS IS FROM A GUY WHO LISTS HIS FAVORITE PEOPLE AS OPRAH AND ANGELA DAVIS! ALSO, HIS PROFILE LISTS HE IS SINGLE AND HAS KIDS – FUNNY HOW THE STRAIGHTS LOVE TO CHERRY-PICK WITH THE BIBLE … SEXUALITY GLOWS IN THEIR MIND BUT THEY CONVENIENTLY FORGET ACCORDING TO THE JIM CROW BIBLE THAT BEARERS OF CHILDREN OUT OF WEDLOCK ARE AN ABOMINATION AND THEIR CHILDREN WILL BE AN ABOMINATION)
    ***************

Some of this might be upsetting to read – actually a lot of it is laughable – but it shows how much work we have as people from straight to gay who are conscious and progressive. Not every post had these comments, but these "types" were definitely the majority.
I really felt like I was reading a KKK site! The Klans hates gay as much as they hate black folks. Some of these comments are scary ... especially considering Blackplanet.com would ban any users (especially if they were white) who posted "black niggers should all die!"

More importantly, could you imagine if you were a young, black man who is questioning your sexuality and you happened to come across this article (
while cruising for a date in the 200+ gay Blackplanet.com chat room) - you're pleased to see an article discussing anything black and gay, BUT you read this forum .... suddenly you regress from the progress you had with your sexuality, confirming your fear that this is the way many black folks think. In addition, for some black gay folks who have not dealt with their sexuality they think no other black gay people exist -- gayness is equated with whiteness.

These mindsets on Blackplanet.com are reinforced in the black church, on street corners in black neighborhoods, at predominately black colleges, etc. This is not to say EVERY black person has this mindset, but we often forget there is such an extreme way to go for education.
I know there is homophobia in all cultures, however, the black community is often used as buffer -- meaning, I've heard right-wing politicians complain, "These gays are saying African-American rights are the same thing!" I've never heard a gay person say that - I think it is media hype. What the right-wing (and left wing) are trying to do is make African-Americans feel like gays are the enemy. "Don't let those faggots think they have it worse than you niggers!" All of it is a tool of decisiveness.... it is very sad ... There is such a long way to go for consciousness.
