He is the author of the highly anticipated novel Ball-Shaped World, which is a fictionalized account of the black and Latino ballroom scene.     R.I.P. Alloura

    I am so sad to hear about Alloura Jordan-Zion, who passed away today. For those who are not familiar with her, she is a ballroom legend who helped reinvent the dramatic performance style of vogue (many of what you are seeing on America's Best Dance Crew is Alloura). Alloura's influence on voguing could be compared Michael Jackson's influence on pop dancing. Alloura changed the game, creating several clones after her.

    I remember when I first saw Alloura in New York City at the Club House in the early nineties. They were calling her a taxi cab because she was popping, dipping and spinning around that floor like a New York City taxi cab. She was amazing to watch perform, I actually sought her out to interview her when I used to feature ballroom interviews. While I had few one-on-one interactions with her, she was always nice to me.

    I am truly sad to hear this news. Alloura is such a loss for the ballroom scene. I just can't believe that I will never get to see her storm the floor again -- her presence was so huge that you thought she would never leave.

    My condolences go out to her family and friends.
